Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics

About the role

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Canterbury is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics. This permanent, full‑time position will support high‑quality teaching and research, contributing to student success and the School’s scholarly reputation.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver research‑informed teaching across the applied mathematics curriculum, fostering critical and analytical skills.
• Lead curriculum design and innovation to improve student experience, retention and graduate outcomes.
• Secure external research funding and enhance the School’s research profile.
• Supervise and mentor postgraduate students, guiding their academic and career development.
• Develop a strong personal research programme and contribute to the School’s research culture.
• Build collaborative links with university colleagues, industry partners, and national/international networks.
• Participate in service, outreach and leadership activities that promote an inclusive, collegial environment.
• For senior appointments, provide research leadership and mentor junior staff.

Required profile

• PhD (or equivalent) in mathematics, statistics or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence with inclusive and innovative practices.
• Evidence of a growing or established research portfolio in applied mathematics.
• Experience in supervision, mentoring or academic leadership.
• Understanding of New Zealand’s bicultural context and the Treaty of Waitangi.
• Strong interpersonal skills for working across diverse communities.
