About the role

The University of Waikato invites applications for a senior academic position within its Counsellor Education programmes. The role involves teaching, research, and supervision to develop future counsellors, with a focus on narrative approaches and support for Māori and Pasifika learners.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in counsellor education.
• Lead and publish research, particularly in narrative counselling and supervision.
• Provide postgraduate supervision and mentorship to students and junior staff.
• Engage in professional, community and iwi service activities related to counselling.
• Contribute to the university’s commitment to Māori and Pacific learner success.

Required profile

• PhD in counselling or a closely related discipline.
• Current professional counselling practice and recent supervision experience.
• Membership of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors or an equivalent body.
• Demonstrated record of research, teaching excellence and leadership.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of narrative therapy, mediation and social constructionist theory.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori perspectives and counselling ethics.
• Ability to integrate bicultural approaches into teaching and research.
