Lead Roads Engineer

About the role

We are expanding our transport infrastructure capability in New Zealand and need an experienced Lead Roads Engineer to drive design delivery across complex rural and urban projects. The role combines hands‑on technical work with leadership, covering feasibility studies, concept design, detailed design, costing, procurement and construction support.

Key responsibilities

• Lead geometric road and civil design from feasibility through construction support for major roading and transport projects.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to engineers and designers.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including transport planning, drainage, utilities, structures, lighting, pavements, rail, geotechnical, environmental and traffic.
• Produce and review high‑quality design packages, drawings, specifications and technical reports in line with client briefs and local authority standards.
• Lead Safety in Design, constructability and project risk discussions.
• Manage scope, programme, financials and risk documentation while ensuring design assurance and commercial discipline.
• Develop pragmatic engineering solutions and maintain trusted relationships with transport agencies and stakeholders.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of the roads practice, including standardisation and digital initiatives.

Required profile

• Strong experience delivering multidisciplinary transport or civil infrastructure projects in a consulting environment.
• Proven capability in geometric road design and technical leadership.
• Experience working with NZTA / Waka Kotahi, Auckland Transport or other local authority standards.
• Solid commercial awareness and ability to manage project risk.
