Lead Engineer – Data Services (Auckland/Wellington)

About the role

ANZ’s Data Delivery team is looking for a Lead Engineer to shape the future of composable data services. The role will provide technical leadership, set standards, and contribute to the strategic roadmap for the bank’s data portfolio. Based in Auckland or Wellington, the position is permanent full‑time.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Architecture team to ensure solutions align with the architectural strategy.
• Lead the design, development, and optimisation of composable data services using Apache Airflow, Apache Spark and Python‑based frameworks.
• Design and implement scalable, memory‑efficient data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
• Champion best practices for data engineering, including coding standards, testing, monitoring and operational excellence.
• Evaluate and introduce new tools and technologies to enhance platform capabilities.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to developers throughout design, coding, configuration and testing phases.
• Ensure solutions comply with architectural standards, security, scalability and maintainability requirements.

Required profile

• Proven experience in data engineering and delivery of enterprise‑scale data platforms.
• Strong technical leadership with the ability to mentor development teams.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and a focus on delivering stable, secure and maintainable solutions.
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams and communicate technical concepts clearly.
