Laboratory Technician

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Technician to join our civil engineering laboratory team in Hawke’s Bay. You will provide both field and laboratory testing of construction materials such as bitumen, aggregates, soils and hot‑mix asphalt, supporting projects across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Perform on‑site sampling and laboratory analysis of road construction materials.
• Test bitumen, asphalt, aggregates, soils and concrete to ensure compliance with quality standards and customer specifications.
• Document results accurately and communicate findings to operational teams.
• Operate specialised equipment, including nuclear densometers where required.
• Work occasional nights and weekends to meet project deadlines.

Required profile

• Full NZ Class 1 driver’s licence (or overseas equivalent).
• Minimum 2 years of field and laboratory testing experience in civil road construction.
• Physically able to lift up to 20 kg and work in varied outdoor conditions.
• Strong attention to detail and good communication skills.
• Willingness to work as part of a team and provide occasional leadership.

Required skills

• Testing of bitumen, soils, road aggregates, asphalt and concrete.
• Operation of nuclear densometer (advantageous).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Field sampling and laboratory testing techniques.
