Heritage & Visitor Ranger – Greymouth

About the role

Join the Department of Conservation as a Heritage and Visitor Ranger based in Greymouth. You will support the maintenance and improvement of the Paparoa Track Great Walk and the Pike29 Memorial Track, ensuring safe and enjoyable experiences for visitors across some of New Zealand’s most spectacular landscapes.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and upgrade the Paparoa Track and Pike29 Memorial Track infrastructure.
• Inspect, repair and prepare huts, bridges and other visitor structures for safe use.
• Carry out track maintenance, drainage work and support construction projects.
• Manage back‑country and front‑country visitor sites, including seasonal hut wardens.
• Collaborate with biodiversity, community and wider Heritage & Visitor teams.

Required profile

• Strong leadership and calm demeanour in remote, challenging environments.
• Excellent communication and a positive, can‑do attitude.
• Ability to plan field work independently and as part of a team.
• Full or restricted Class 1 driver licence.
• Good physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors.

Required skills

• Experience with dual‑use tracks, swales and shaped drainage systems.
• Class 6 motorcycle licence (desirable).
• Tree‑felling qualification or working towards it (desirable).
• Experience operating around helicopters (desirable).
