General Manager – Courts & Justice Services

About the role

The Ministry of Justice is seeking a General Manager for Courts and Justice Services to lead policy work that shapes how New Zealanders experience the justice system. This senior position sits in the Policy Group, reports to the Deputy Secretary Policy, and influences the Ministry’s overall policy direction.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of policy professionals, fostering an inclusive culture and high‑quality output.
• Steer the strategic direction, performance and capability of the Courts and Justice Services Policy Unit.
• Provide clear, timely advice to Ministers on major justice issues.
• Build and maintain trusted relationships with Ministers, senior public‑sector leaders, the judiciary and key stakeholders.
• Identify emerging trends and opportunities to shape the future of New Zealand’s justice system.
• Champion organisational improvement and innovation across the Policy Group.
• Ensure strong operational, financial and risk management to deliver better outcomes for New Zealanders.
