General Manager Communications

About the role

The Department of Internal Affairs is seeking an experienced leader to head its Communications Group. Reporting to the Secretary of Internal Affairs and working closely with the Executive Leadership Team, you will shape the department’s internal and external storytelling.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a cohesive communications strategy for the whole department.
• Oversee internal and external communications, media relations, and high‑profile events.
• Provide strategic communications advice to senior leaders, including the Secretary.
• Lead and mentor a team of communications professionals, ensuring high performance.
• Coordinate communications for major programmes and key initiatives.

Required profile

• Significant communications leadership experience in a large or complex public‑sector organisation, or equivalent private‑sector experience.
• Proven track record advising senior leaders on strategic communications issues.
• Experience working in large, diverse, and complex organisations.
• Demonstrated success in developing and delivering high‑quality strategic communications advice.
• Strong background in leading high‑performing communications teams.
