Full‑Stack Software Engineer – AI‑focused Contractor

About the role

Westpac New Zealand is looking for a full‑stack software engineer to join its Technology team in Wellington. The role focuses on building an AI‑driven Agentic Delivery Framework and delivering a modern Web UI that powers the platform.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with a technology manager to design and implement the Agentic Delivery Framework.
• Develop and maintain a responsive Web UI using React and modern SPA techniques.
• Build and evolve the backend engine, ensuring robust APIs and distributed system reliability.
• Advocate for AI integration while promoting best practices in accessibility and user experience.
• Write clean, well‑tested code and contribute to continuous improvement of development processes.

Required profile

• 5‑10 years of professional experience in Java development.
• Proven expertise in JavaScript, React, and single‑page applications with a focus on accessibility.
• Strong understanding of APIs, distributed systems, and full‑stack development, including AI components.
• UX‑driven mindset and ability to work autonomously in a collaborative environment.
