Executive Director – Union Leadership

About the role

The New Zealand Writers Guild (NZWG) is seeking an Executive Director to lead the union at a pivotal moment in its 50‑year history. Based in Auckland, this full‑time position reports to the Board and provides strategic, advocacy and operational leadership for the screenwriters’ professional body.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and day‑to‑day operational management of the Guild.
• Lead collective bargaining under the Screen Industry Workers Act (SIWA) in partnership with the Board and members.
• Oversee membership services, communications and organisational systems.
• Advocate for screenwriters with government, industry, funders and media.
• Build and maintain relationships with producers, broadcasters and international writer organisations.
• Support strong governance through board reporting, policy advice and compliance.
• Manage staff and contractors to deliver a high‑performing, values‑aligned team.
• Lead advocacy on copyright, AI and screen policy matters.
• Represent New Zealand at international writers’ forums, including IAWG.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in a union, membership body, arts organisation or similar.
• Deep understanding of the New Zealand screen industry or a related creative sector.
• Demonstrated ability to build coalitions, negotiate effectively and navigate complex industrial relations.
• Commitment to the creative workforce and to advancing fair pay, strong contracts and writer protection.
