Executive Director – Commercial and Advisory

About the role

The Executive Director – Commercial and Advisory will provide high‑level strategic, commercial and technical advice to the Infrastructure and Assets Group of Hamilton City Council. Reporting to the General Manager, the role influences major infrastructure decisions and supports the delivery of the city’s growth priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver commercial and strategic engineering advice for business cases, investment proposals and delivery approaches.
• Partner with senior leaders to analyse risks, evaluate options and present clear recommendations.
• Support oversight of large infrastructure programmes, ensuring risks are identified and managed.
• Guide procurement strategies, negotiate complex contracts and monitor performance.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal teams, contractors and external partners to influence outcomes.
• Identify and manage governance, financial, legal and reputational risks within council frameworks.
• Provide informal leadership, coaching and mentorship across the group without direct line management.

Required profile

• Senior leader with extensive experience in infrastructure, commercial advisory or related engineering fields.
• Proven ability to influence senior decision‑makers and drive strategic outcomes.
• Strong analytical mindset with a focus on practical, evidence‑based recommendations.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
