Director Regional Operations – Northern North Island

About the role
The Department of Conservation is seeking a senior leader to direct regional operations across the Northern North Island of New Zealand. Reporting to the Deputy Director‑General, Operations, you will guide a large, geographically dispersed team and act as the public face of the organisation in the region.
Key responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership for biodiversity, recreation, historic and community‑engagement conservation programmes.
- Oversee four district offices (Kaitaia, Bay of Islands, Whangarei, Kauri Coast) and a central regional office.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with iwi/hapū, local councils, government agencies and community partners.
- Drive project delivery, risk mitigation and emergency response across a complex operational landscape.
- Champion health, safety and wellbeing for all staff and contractors.
Required profile
- Proven operational leadership experience in a large, complex organisation, preferably in environmental or resource management.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with iwi, hapū, councils and other stakeholders.
- Strong people‑leadership skills with a track record of inspiring high‑performing, multi‑location teams.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, safety culture and community engagement.

What we offer
- Permanent contract with a salary range of $206,880–$284,460 per year (based on experience).
- Flexibility to be based anywhere within the region, with regular travel and overnight stays.
