Director Regional Operations – Northern North Island

About the role

The Department of Conservation is seeking a senior leader to direct regional operations across the Northern North Island. This permanent role will guide high‑performing teams, shape strategic conservation outcomes, and act as the public face of the organisation in the region.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of biodiversity, recreation, historic and community‑engagement conservation work across four district offices and a regional office.
• Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for a large, geographically dispersed team.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with iwi/hapū, local councils, government agencies and community partners.
• Travel regularly throughout the region, including overnight stays, to support teams and engage stakeholders.
• Identify, assess and mitigate operational risks and respond to emergency events.

Required profile

• Proven operational leadership experience in a large, complex organisation, preferably in environmental or resource management.
• Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate and develop teams across multiple locations.
• Excellent relationship‑building skills with diverse stakeholder groups, especially iwi and government partners.
• Commitment to health, safety and wellbeing of staff.

• Permanent position with a competitive salary range of $206,880–$284,460 per year.
