Director, Office of the Deputy Secretary – Strategy

About the role

This senior position sits at the heart of New Zealand's justice system strategy, providing influence and insight to the Deputy Secretary and senior leaders. You will lead a small, high‑impact team to shape system direction, improve performance, and advance outcomes for Māori.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a dedicated team delivering strategic advice, analysis and insight across the justice portfolio.
• Advise the Deputy Secretary and senior executives on priorities, risks and investment opportunities.
• Integrate data, evaluation, sector insight and relationships to inform performance decisions.
• Strengthen the Ministry's approach to Māori outcomes and partnership with iwi, hapū and Māori organisations.
• Provide oversight and assurance for Crown entity performance, sector priorities and system‑wide strategy.

Required profile

• Strategic, people‑centred leader thriving in complexity and ambiguity.
• Proven experience leading high‑performing teams in fast‑moving environments.
• Strong strategic judgement with a track record of advising senior or executive level stakeholders.
• Ability to synthesize data, research and insight into clear, actionable advice.
• Deep experience across government, policy or complex systems, ideally with justice or social sector exposure.
• Highly developed relationship and influencing skills across organisational boundaries.
• Demonstrated commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and improving outcomes for Māori.
• Confidence to act as both strategic thought partner and delivery leader.
• Understanding of the machinery of government, including ministerial servicing and public‑sector processes.
