Deputy Mayor Communications Advisor

About the role

The Deputy Mayor of Auckland is seeking a Communications Advisor to craft and share the story of the city’s largest council. This hands‑on, fixed‑term position runs until August 2028 and sits within a small, high‑performing office that works daily on content creation and media engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and grow the Deputy Mayor’s presence across all social media platforms, providing guidance on effective tactics.
• Produce, film, photograph and edit multimedia content at live events, often using an iPhone.
• Write a wide range of communications, including speeches, talking points, media statements, press releases and op‑eds.
• Serve as the first point of contact for media, coordinating responses, statements and interview arrangements.
• Switch between creative digital production, publicity (press releases, media liaison) and marketing tools as needed.

Required profile

• Practical experience in content production, social media, digital marketing, media relations or journalism.
• Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment and work flexible hours when events or media require.
• Strong relationship‑building skills with diverse stakeholders and sound political judgement.
• Confidence engaging with media and preparing high‑quality communications at speed.
• Enthusiasm, initiative, integrity and the capacity to represent the Deputy Mayor’s authentic voice.
