Dairy Farm Assistant – Hands‑on Role on Modern Farm

About the role

Join the high‑performing team at Totara Dairy, a modern 1,100‑cow operation located just ten minutes from Westport. This hands‑on position offers exposure to all aspects of contemporary dairy farming, from milking to animal health management.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with daily milking, calving, feeding and general stock care.
• Manage effluent, spray treatments and maintain fencing.
• Operate and maintain modern shed equipment, including a 60‑bale rotary shed with milk hub technology.
• Support animal health programmes, mating plans and stock movement using Halter technology.
• Contribute to environmental responsibility initiatives and continuous improvement projects.

Required profile

• Enthusiastic, hands‑on attitude with a passion for farming.
• Good communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Proactive approach, commitment to animal welfare, health and safety.
• Current NZ restricted or full driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Experience or familiarity with milk hub technology.
• Ability to operate automatic cup removers.
• Knowledge of automatic teat spraying systems.
• Use of Halter technology for stock movement.
