About the role

The Curator will join the highly experienced curatorial team at Christchurch Art Gallery, reporting to the Lead Curator. The role focuses on researching, developing and delivering innovative, audience‑focused exhibitions that engage with national and international contemporary art practices.

Key responsibilities

• Research and conceptualise new exhibition programmes that reflect current artistic trends.
• Develop and deliver high‑quality exhibitions from inception to installation.
• Collaborate closely with artists, writers and external partners.
• Work with museum staff across departments to ensure audience‑oriented interpretation and collection development.
• Contribute to the gallery’s public programming, talks and publications.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in curatorial studies, art history or a related field.
• Demonstrated track record of curating high‑quality exhibitions and delivering public presentations.
• Strong connections within the New Zealand visual arts sector.
• Ability to engage diverse audiences, including Māori, Pacific peoples and youth.
• Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.

• Strong written communication for exhibition texts and publications.
• Effective oral presentation and public speaking abilities.
