Crown Counsel and Assistant Crown Counsel

About the role

Crown Law is recruiting for a range of senior legal positions, including Crown Counsel and Assistant Crown Counsel, across its Attorney‑General, Criminal and Crown Legal Risk groups. The roles are based in Auckland and Wellington and involve both litigation and advisory work for the New Zealand government.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality legal advice to government agencies on complex matters.
• Represent the Crown in court proceedings, tribunals and other dispute resolution forums.
• Develop and manage legal risk strategies for the Crown’s operations.
• Collaborate with other legal teams, including the Attorney‑General and Criminal divisions.
• Draft, review and negotiate legal documents, policies and legislation.

Required profile

• A qualified lawyer admitted to the New Zealand bar.
• Significant experience in litigation and/or advisory work, preferably within the public sector.
• Strong analytical and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis.
• Court advocacy and case management.
• Drafting of legal opinions, briefs and legislative instruments.
