About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) within the Ministry of Justice is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its Tauranga office as a PAL1 Lawyer. The role involves providing high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients and managing a diverse criminal caseload.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients.
• Manage a varied caseload of criminal matters.
• Provide support to intermediate and senior lawyers.
• Liaise with courts, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure effective case progression.
• Maintain compliance with legal‑aid guidelines and organisational policies.

Required profile

• Hold PAL1 approval level and be qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
• Demonstrate a strong passion for criminal justice issues.
• Ability to develop credibility with judges, peers, and clients.
• Empathy and the capacity to relate to a wide range of individuals.
