Criminal Defence Lawyer (PAL1) – Public Defence Service, Tauranga

About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its Tauranga office as a PAL1 Lawyer. You will provide high‑quality defence representation for legally aided clients, manage a diverse criminal caseload, and support more junior team members.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive defence advocacy for clients receiving legal aid.
• Manage a varied portfolio of criminal matters from inception to resolution.
• Provide mentorship and support to intermediate and senior lawyers within the team.
• Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with court procedures.

Required profile

• Current PAL1 approval level and qualification to practice law in New Zealand.
• Strong passion for criminal justice and experience in criminal defence.
• Ability to build credibility with judges, peers, and clients.
• Excellent communication, empathy, and collaborative mindset.

Required skills

• PAL1 accreditation.
• Qualified New Zealand lawyer.
• Proven experience in criminal litigation.
