Criminal Defence Lawyer (PAL1) – Public Defence Service

About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its North Shore office in Albany as a PAL1 Lawyer. You will provide high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients and work within a collaborative, supportive team dedicated to criminal advocacy.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive defence representation for a varied caseload of criminal matters.
• Manage legally aided client files from intake through to resolution.
• Provide guidance and support to intermediate and senior lawyers within the team.

Required profile

• Hold a PAL1 approval level and be qualified to practise law in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated passion for criminal justice and the ability to build credibility with judges and peers.
• Strong empathy and the capacity to relate to a diverse range of clients and colleagues.
• Willingness to share legal expertise, exchange ideas and contribute to team brainstorming.
