Consultant Rheumatologist

About the role

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking a Consultant Rheumatologist to join its district‑wide Rheumatology Service. The role involves delivering patient‑centred specialist care across multiple hospitals in the Wellington region, supporting patients to manage disease, prevent damage, and maintain quality of life.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive rheumatology assessments in outpatient clinics and inpatient settings.
• Participate in the acute on‑call roster, offering timely specialist consultations.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of seven rheumatologists and five nurses.
• Contribute to service development, including expansion of musculoskeletal ultrasound capability.
• Engage in shared decision‑making and active disease management with patients.

Required profile

• Medical qualification and specialist registration in rheumatology.
• Commitment to high‑quality, compassionate patient care.
• Willingness to work across Hutt, Kenepuru, Masterton and Wellington hospitals.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Proficiency in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
