About the role
We are looking for a Casual Gallery Assistant to help create welcoming and memorable experiences for visitors at the Whakatāne District Council Gallery. In this role you will support exhibitions, events, public programmes and community‑engagement activities, acting as a friendly face that connects people with art and culture.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with the installation and de‑installation of exhibitions.
- Support school groups, community workshops and other public programmes.
- Help run gallery events, openings and special activities.
- Engage with visitors, answer questions and provide information about artworks.
- Maintain a clean, safe and accessible gallery environment.
- Provide general administrative and front‑of‑house support as needed.
Required profile
- Genuine interest in art, culture and community.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and enjoyment of meeting people from diverse backgrounds.
- Team‑oriented, reliable and organised with a willingness to learn.
- Background in tourism, hospitality, events, customer service, education or community engagement is valued.
- No prior gallery experience required, but a passion for the sector is essential.
