Business Manager - Agriculture

About the role

The Bioeconomy Science Institute is seeking a commercially‑minded Business Manager to lead its private‑sector agriculture portfolio. The role bridges scientific teams with New Zealand’s pastoral farming sector, turning research into practical, value‑adding solutions for farmers and industry.

Key responsibilities

• Build and grow relationships with private‑sector agricultural customers and industry stakeholders.
• Identify and secure new commercial research opportunities.
• Translate customer challenges into science‑led solutions.
• Lead customer engagement, proposal development and contract negotiations.
• Collaborate with scientists and research teams to deliver successful outcomes.
• Represent the Institute at industry networks, forums and events.
• Contribute to the growth and success of the Commercial Group.

Required profile

• Strong relationship‑building ability with commercial acumen.
• Proven experience in business development, account or commercial management.
• Deep knowledge of New Zealand’s pastoral farming sector.
• Track record of growing revenue and managing contracts.
• Ability to communicate complex scientific information in practical terms.
• Excellent organisational and negotiation skills.
• Tertiary qualification in agriculture, science, business or a related field.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a research environment.
• Existing networks within the agricultural sector are an advantage.
