Biosecurity Auditor

About the role

The Biosecurity Auditor will deliver a regulatory function under the Biosecurity Act 1993, conducting audits and monitoring the performance of Biosecurity New Zealand’s border verification programmes. Based in Wellington, the role helps protect New Zealand’s primary industries by ensuring that verification programmes minimise the risk of pests and diseases.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute audits for Transitional Facilities, Grain Import Systems, Ports of First Arrival and the Recognised Cruise Line Programme.
• Prepare audit schedules, conduct meetings with senior management, and produce detailed audit reports.
• Perform unannounced audits and follow‑up investigations on critical non‑compliances.
• Maintain and record biosecurity data in line with the Biosecurity Act 1993.
• Provide pre‑approval verification for businesses and operators, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

Required profile

• Proven experience in auditing, risk, assurance or compliance, preferably in a regulatory environment.
• Ability to work independently, make evidence‑based decisions and collaborate within a team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and resilience in delivering results.
• Experience managing relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Required skills

• Knowledge of ISO 17020 standards and duties of authorised signatories.
• Familiarity with biosecurity legislation and regulatory audit processes.
