Tour Guide – Night Sky Experiences

About the role

Join the Dark Sky Project team to deliver unforgettable night‑sky experiences to visitors at the Takapō lakefront Astronomy Centre. You will guide and drive guests, sharing the science of the stars and Māori astronomy while ensuring a safe, welcoming environment.

Key responsibilities

• Guide and drive visitors on night‑sky tours, providing engaging interpretation of astronomy and Tātai Aroraki.
• Welcome manuhiri with hospitality (manaakitanga) and manage guest interactions.
• Conduct routine vehicle inspections, maintain accurate driver logbooks, and uphold health‑and‑safety standards.
• Work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years experience in astronomy‑based guiding, science communication, visitor interpretation or tour guiding.
• Strong public‑speaking ability and customer‑facing experience.
• Valid New Zealand driver’s licence (or ability to obtain), P endorsement, Class 2 licence, and First Aid certificate (or ability to obtain).
• Commitment to health and safety, time‑management skills, and interest in correctly pronouncing reo Māori names.
• Availability for shift work and willingness to learn additional languages (Japanese, Mandarin advantageous).
