Telecommunications Technician

About the role

Ventia is seeking an experienced, self‑driven Telecommunications Technician to join its Wireless and Critical Infrastructure team. Based in Christchurch, you will work on high‑profile projects for power and telecommunications clients, installing, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting transmission communication systems that keep critical infrastructure connected.

Key responsibilities

• Install, commission and test low‑voltage DC power plant equipment, including battery systems.
• Deploy and configure IP networks using equipment from Nokia, Alcatel‑Lucent and Cisco.
• Carry out transmission system installation and commissioning for Ethernet, SDH and PDH technologies.
• Perform outside and inside plant cabling, testing, fault repair and data‑cable tray/raceway installation.
• Support WiFi, VOIP and SCADA systems and maintain protection signalling equipment.

Required profile

• Hands‑on, safety‑focused professional comfortable working at heights.
• Proven experience on New Zealand or Australian telecommunications or power networks.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and stakeholder interaction.
• Willingness to participate in a 24/7 standby roster and travel to project sites, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics.
