About the role
Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand is looking for a passionate Teacher of the Deaf to join its Ormiston Provision. This permanent 0.8 FTE position supports Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners within a Deaf bilingual environment, working closely with students, whānau, colleagues and partner schools to promote academic success and cultural identity.
Key responsibilities
- Design and deliver inclusive, bilingual‑bicultural teaching programmes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing ākonga.
- Create engaging learning environments that foster wellbeing, language development and cultural confidence.
- Collaborate with whānau, specialists and partner schools to tailor support and monitor progress.
- Assess student achievement and adapt instructional strategies to ensure equitable outcomes.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Deaf Bilingual Provision.
Required profile
- Current full teacher registration in New Zealand.
- Demonstrated commitment to equitable outcomes and culturally responsive practice.
- Willingness to grow expertise in Deaf and Hard of Hearing education.
- Commitment to bilingual‑bicultural pedagogy.
- Preferred: Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) or willingness to undertake it.
Required skills
- Proficiency in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) or a strong intention to develop NZSL skills.
