Structures and Civils Maintenance Superintendent

About the role

The Structures and Civils Maintenance Superintendent leads the Structures team and provides senior technical oversight for the maintenance of rail structures and civil infrastructure across the Wellington Metro network. The role ensures safety, integrity and performance of assets such as bridges, tunnels, culverts, retaining walls, platforms, earthworks and drainage, supporting reliable rail operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the full employee lifecycle for direct reports, including recruitment, talent development, performance management and resolution of employment matters.
• Develop and execute maintenance strategies, ensuring assets remain code‑compliant through planned and programmed regimes.
• Own maintenance expenditure, managing defect response and routine work within approved budgets and aligned to asset risk.
• Shape maintenance planning to optimise whole‑life cost, minimise reactive work and enhance network resilience.
• Collaborate with civil and structural asset engineers to produce accurate condition and performance reporting.
• Work with maintenance and planning teams to resource maintenance requirements efficiently.
• Oversee safety‑critical work, fault response, incident investigations and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in rail or civil infrastructure maintenance leadership.
• Proven ability to manage large, multidisciplinary teams and develop talent.
• Strong knowledge of asset risk management, budgeting and compliance standards.
• Demonstrated skill in planning, scheduling and optimisation of maintenance programmes.
• Excellent collaboration with engineering, operations and asset management stakeholders.
• Commitment to safety culture and incident investigation processes.
