Software Engineer

About the role

Wētā FX is looking for a Software Engineer to join its Technology & Research team in Wellington. You will help create and maintain robust, scalable tools that enable hundreds of artists to produce world‑class visual effects for film and television. The role involves solving technical challenges, integrating emerging technologies, and collaborating across creative and technical teams.

Key responsibilities

• Write scalable, robust code that integrates with Wētā FX custom libraries.
• Troubleshoot software issues and provide support to a wide range of internal users.
• Deliver pragmatic solutions in a fast‑paced, evolving production environment.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to design and implement optimal solutions.
• Participate in coding, testing, integration, and release cycles to keep production pipelines safe and efficient.

Required profile

• Strong Python development skills or comparable language experience.
• Experience developing within DCC tools such as Houdini or Autodesk Maya.
• Familiarity with Git version control.
• Understanding of software engineering principles, architecture, design patterns and testing methodologies.
• Self‑motivated, proactive, adaptable and able to work in time‑critical environments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with developers, artists and leadership.
