Senior/Principal Automation Engineer – HV Substation Automation

About the role
APD Global is seeking an experienced Senior/Principal Automation Engineer to join its Substations team in Auckland. You will lead the design and delivery of high‑voltage substation automation systems, supporting New Zealand’s transition to a smarter, more sustainable energy grid.
Key responsibilities
- Design HV substation automation systems from concept through detailed design.
- Prepare and review design documentation, specifications and reports.
- Configure and test automation software and hardware, including FAT and SAT activities.
- Commission RTU, PLC, HMI and network equipment on site.
- Conduct site visits, commissioning, and support post‑installation activities.
- Ensure compliance with client, New Zealand and international standards through QA checks and audits.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to strategic planning and innovation.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Engineering (or equivalent).
- 5+ years experience in design, development, testing and commissioning of HV substation automation or process control.
- Proven experience with RTU, PLC, HMI and network equipment (e.g., SEL, Siemens, ABB, Schneider, Allen‑Bradley, Cisco).
- Strong knowledge of substation communication protocols.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel for site work.
- CPEng registration desirable or in progress.
Required skills
- HV substation automation design.
- RTU, PLC and HMI configuration.
- Network equipment setup (SEL, Siemens, ABB, Schneider, Allen‑Bradley, Cisco).
- Automation software and hardware configuration.
- DNP3 and Modbus protocols (essential).
- IEC 60870‑5‑104 and IEC 61850 (MMS & GOOSE) – advantageous.
- ELV installation (cubicle wiring, cable termination) – advantageous.
