Senior Systems Security Engineer

About the role

We are building the future of cybersecurity at the University of Auckland. The new Health Data Management team seeks four Senior Systems Security Engineers to design, implement and govern security controls that protect sensitive health information.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain technical security controls to ensure compliance for systems handling sensitive health data.
• Partner with product owners and engineering teams to assess risks, develop mitigation strategies and strengthen system resilience.
• Conduct security assessments, validate controls and produce clear risk and assurance documentation.
• Develop and improve security standards, governance processes and compliance practices aligned with recognised health security frameworks.
• Leverage security tooling to monitor compliance, identify risks and increase visibility across the university’s digital environment.
• Drive continuous improvement of security practices, technical controls and engineering processes across Digital Services.

Required profile

• Experienced security engineer with a background in regulated environments and familiarity with frameworks such as HISF, DHSF, HITRUST CSF or ISO 27001.
• Hands‑on experience across operating systems, infrastructure, networks and enterprise platforms.
• Ability to design, validate and continuously improve technical controls.
• Passion for security engineering, governance, compliance and building secure‑by‑design solutions.

What we offer

• Full‑time permanent position (37.5 hours per week)
• Salary range NZ$110,700 – NZ$149,800 per annum, dependent on experience
