Senior Systems Security Engineer – Automation & Vulnerability Management

About the role

The University of Auckland’s Digital Services Cybersecurity team is creating a new team to transform patching and vulnerability management across its technology ecosystem. As a Senior Systems Security Engineer you will design, automate and manage patching solutions, helping to improve the university’s cyber‑resilience.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and operate automated patching solutions for cloud and on‑premise environments.
• Identify, assess and drive remediation of security vulnerabilities across enterprise systems, servers and devices.
• Partner with Product Owners and technology teams to develop practical remediation strategies.
• Leverage enterprise vulnerability‑management and endpoint‑management tools to enhance visibility, reporting and outcomes.
• Provide technical leadership and expert advice on secure system configuration, patch and vulnerability management.
• Drive continuous improvement through automation, process optimisation and modern security‑engineering practices.

Required profile

• Experienced engineer with broad exposure to enterprise technologies, operating systems, cloud platforms, infrastructure, applications and endpoint management.
• Strong hands‑on engineering background and ability to solve complex technical challenges.
• Proven capability to influence stakeholders and collaborate closely with product owners.
• Passion for automation, security engineering and building lasting solutions in a large, diverse environment.
