Senior Solicitor – Fixed‑term or Permanent

About the role

The Ministry is seeking experienced lawyers to support its response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care. Two senior solicitor positions are available – one on a 12‑month fixed‑term (or secondment) basis and one permanent – to provide high‑quality legal advice in a sensitive, trauma‑informed environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and process historic abuse claims filed with the Ministry.
• Prepare documentation and liaise with external lawyers and redress agencies.
• Ensure consistency of processes across agencies.
• Support broader public‑law work, including legislation drafting, operational advice, and litigation management (permanent role).
• Provide practical, timely advice aligned with legal obligations and Crown commitments.

Required profile

• At least 6 years of relevant legal experience.
• Litigation and/or inquiries experience; court experience beneficial.
• Public‑law experience is a plus.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to deliver clear, practical advice in complex contexts.
• Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi principles.
• Law degree and a current New Zealand practising certificate.
