Senior Overhead Line Designer

About the role

Mills Recruitment is partnering with a leading electrical distribution organisation in Central Otago to hire a Senior Overhead Line Designer. You will lead end‑to‑end design of overhead and underground line networks, mentor junior designers and provide practical engineering support to construction teams.

Key responsibilities

• Develop high‑quality designs for upgrades, renewals and new installations of overhead and underground lines.
• Ensure designs comply with national and network standards, including AS/NZS 7000.
• Conduct site surveys, collect field data and translate findings into design solutions.
• Provide engineering support to construction crews and perform set‑outs on site.
• Collaborate with clients, customers and internal stakeholders throughout project life‑cycles.
• Mentor and review work of junior designers to maintain accuracy and quality.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation, reports and design records.
• Uphold health and safety standards and promote a strong safety culture.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in line design within the electrical industry.
• Proven experience in both sub‑transmission and distribution design.
• Strong knowledge of relevant standards and legislation, especially AS/NZS 7000.
• Full NZ Class 1 driver’s licence (or ability to obtain).
• Excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving abilities.
• Willingness to travel to remote sites as required.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Experience with COLDNet or CATAN.
• Experience with PLS‑CADD or PLS‑POLE.
