Senior Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Cubic Defence is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Auckland engineering team. You will work on complex, multidisciplinary defence training products, guiding them from concept through to manufacture, delivery and ongoing support.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and subsystems for advanced defence training solutions.
• Participate in all product lifecycle stages, from concept and detailed design to production and sustainment.
• Create high‑quality engineering documentation, drawings and manufacturing packages.
• Lead design reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
• Assemble, test and evaluate prototypes and validation units.
• Maintain accurate Bills of Materials, drawings and configuration control.
• Prepare prototype and pre‑production reports, identifying manufacturing improvements and risk mitigation.
• Develop assembly instructions and optimise manufacturing processes for quality, efficiency and repeatability.
• Analyse assembly times and processes to improve productivity and reduce lifecycle costs.
• Design or source production tooling, fixtures and jigs, and support production teams through training and process improvement.
• Investigate field issues and drive continuous product improvements.
• Research new materials and manufacturing techniques to enhance performance and lower costs.
• Promote health, safety and continuous improvement practices, including 5S.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum five years of mechanical engineering experience in a relevant industry.
• Strong understanding of mechanical product design principles, especially Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
• Proven experience designing plastic injection‑moulded components.
