Senior Laboratory Technician

About the role

Fulton Hogan is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician to join its busy materials testing laboratory in Alexandra, Otago. Working closely with the Laboratory Manager, you will ensure accurate, reliable testing of soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt, supporting the quality and performance of civil construction projects.

Key responsibilities

• Perform accurate and timely laboratory testing on soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose.
• Ensure all testing complies with IANZ, ISO 17025 and internal quality standards.
• Troubleshoot testing issues and escalate risks when necessary.
• Support the efficient day‑to‑day operation of the laboratory.
• Guide and mentor trainee technicians in correct testing methods.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years experience in a civil engineering materials testing laboratory.
• Holding or working towards IANZ Key Technical Person (KTP) status is advantageous.
• Proven competence testing soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt.
• Strong understanding of testing standards and laboratory procedures.
• Experience with quality systems, including ISO 17025.
• High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
• Ability to interpret, analyse and clearly report results.
• Confident written and verbal communicator.
