Rail Internship Programme – Multiple Positions

About the role

KiwiRail is offering a 10‑12 week internship programme that gives students hands‑on experience across a range of rail‑related disciplines. Interns will work from KiwiRail’s corporate offices, shadow experienced professionals and contribute to real projects that support New Zealand’s transport network.

Key responsibilities

• Assist project teams in delivering tasks related to cyber security, civil, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, engineering, project management or urban planning.
• Participate in health, safety and personal development training sessions.
• Collaborate with a designated buddy to understand KiwiRail’s ways of working.
• Prepare brief reports or presentations on assigned work.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program (e.g., cyber security, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, project management, urban planning, economics).
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Motivated to learn and explore career possibilities within the rail sector.
• Citizen or resident of New Zealand.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge related to the chosen discipline (e.g., fundamentals of cyber security, civil design principles, electrical systems, mechanical/mechatronics concepts, project management tools, urban planning methods).
