Prototype Development & Test Technician

About the role

Holmes Solutions is seeking a motivated Prototype Development & Test Technician to join our Christchurch team. You will work hands‑on to fabricate, assemble and test prototypes across structural, mechanical and electro‑mechanical domains, collaborating closely with engineers to turn concepts into reliable solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute multi‑phase testing programmes, including concept exploration, performance validation, durability assessment and failure investigation.
• Install, operate and maintain instrumentation, sensors and data‑acquisition systems to capture high‑quality test data.
• Collect, process and present test results, producing clear records, reports and methodologies.
• Fabricate, assemble and commission prototypes, test rigs, jigs and fixtures from engineering drawings.
• Troubleshoot technical issues during builds and testing, working collaboratively to resolve them.
• Manage development timelines, testing schedules, equipment availability and material procurement across concurrent projects.
• Support client demonstrations, witnessed testing and technical discussions during design reviews.

Required profile

• Strong practical problem‑solving ability and confidence to work independently in a dynamic environment.
• Broad workshop experience in product development, prototyping, manufacturing or testing.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and develop practical solutions when specifications are evolving.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills, with a focus on continuous improvement.
