Project Manager – HVDC Upgrade Programme

About the role

Transpower is seeking a Project Manager to lead the HVDC Upgrade Programme, a nationally significant multi‑year initiative that will replace and add high‑voltage direct current cables linking New Zealand’s North and South Islands. The role will oversee projects from early definition through to commissioning, ensuring safety, quality and delivery against programme, budget and stakeholder expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of HVDC‑related projects such as controls replacement, new filter‑bank design and construction, and implementation of a Pole 2 overload scheme.
• Define project scope, develop schedules, manage budgets and monitor risks throughout the project lifecycle.
• Coordinate with internal specialists and external design‑and‑build partners, ensuring robust safety systems and compliance with non‑standard commercial contracts.
• Report progress, outcomes and optimisation opportunities to senior leadership and programme governance bodies.
• Drive commercial and delivery judgement to achieve whole‑of‑life value and cost efficiencies.

Required profile

• Proven track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects or programmes.
• Experience with bespoke, non‑standard commercial contract terms and structured reporting systems.
• Strong understanding of HVDC, power electronics and control systems.
• Recognised project management qualification, preferably PMP or equivalent.
