Principal Planner / Team Leader

About the role

SLR is seeking a Principal Planner/Team Leader to join its national Planning team in Wellington. The role combines inspirational leadership, business development and technical excellence to help deliver high‑quality sustainability solutions for a diverse client base.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and lead four direct reports within the Wellington Planning Team.
• Provide technical leadership, training and coaching to Technical Directors and Team Leaders.
• Lead client‑facing project workstreams and ensure delivery on time and within budget.
• Collaborate across specialist disciplines (Ecology, Marine Science, Acoustics, Hydrology, Landscape Architecture, etc.) to meet utilisation targets.
• Contribute to the growth of the Planning Service in line with SLR’s purpose and values.
• Manage commercial risk by reviewing project work and maintaining standards of excellence.

Required profile

• 10+ years of experience in planning and resource management.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in resource management planning.
• Proven leadership of senior professionals and high‑performing teams.
• Commercially savvy with a strong industry network that drives repeat and new business.
• Track record of building trusted client relationships and consistently meeting targets.
