Operative – General Maintenance & Operations

About the role

The Operative will carry out general maintenance works and operations on highways, working alongside a Chargehand. The role includes responding to emergencies, call‑outs and winter maintenance duties, often as a second man or driver’s mate.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine and cyclical maintenance tasks on highway infrastructure.
• Assist with emergency call‑outs and out‑of‑hours rotas as required.
• Support winter maintenance activities, acting as a second man or driver’s mate.
• Operate small plant, equipment and mini excavators where needed.
• Complete and submit record sheets, either paper‑based or electronic.
• Take responsibility for plant and equipment safety and usage.

Required profile

• Minimum 12 months of relevant experience.
• Ability to work as part of a team and adapt to changing crew members.
• Willingness to work varying hours, including emergency and winter call‑outs.
• Commitment to health and safety, both personal and for others.
• Interest in obtaining an LGV licence is a plus.
