Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Based primarily at our Wairakei office, the Mechanical Engineer will deliver design and engineering services for geothermal, hydropower and other mechanical projects, working both on‑site and at client locations internationally.

Key responsibilities

• Provide mechanical design for steam‑field, geothermal and hydropower systems.
• Develop engineering solutions including plant modifications, upgrades and maintenance designs.
• Support site engineering activities such as commissioning, quality documentation and technical guidance.
• Prepare specifications, process design basis, functional descriptions, instrumentation requirements and mechanical equipment specifications.
• Manage small to medium design and design‑build projects, overseeing budgeting, scheduling, procurement and cost tracking.
• Assist with tendering and estimating activities.
• Build strong client relationships and respond promptly to client needs.
• Mentor junior engineers and graduates.
• Ensure compliance with Safety in Design, quality systems and health, safety and environmental standards.

Required profile

• At least five years of experience in the energy sector, preferably in geothermal, hydropower or process engineering.
• Mechanical Engineering degree (Washington Accord preferred).
• Eligibility or progress toward CPEng or IMechE registration.
• Proven project leadership experience with cost and schedule management.
• Strong communication skills and ability to build client relationships.
• Willingness to travel and work internationally as required.

• Proficiency with piping design/drafting software (e.g., CAD).
