Market Analyst / Senior Market Analyst

About the role

Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's national electricity grid and, as System Operator, runs the wholesale electricity market so that supply meets demand. The Market Services group supports real-time delivery of the System Operator service, provides information on risks to security of supply, procures specialist market products and supports stakeholder engagement. This role is based in the Wellington office and involves modelling and analysis of the electricity market to inform policy, forecast supply and investigate system changes.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to modelling and analysis of the electricity market today and into the future
• Inform policy, forecast electricity supply and investigate system changes that enable new technology to be deployed
• Communicate the insights of your work to colleagues, senior staff and external stakeholders so they can make informed decisions
• Prioritise work including projects while remaining agile and flexible in fluid situations that sometimes need answers at short notice

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in mathematics, science, engineering, economics, operations research or a related field
• Existing eligibility to work in New Zealand
• Ability to work with ambiguity and solve problems with missing information
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including documentation and presenting technical concepts simply
• Results-oriented, proactive and inquisitive

Knowledge of the New Zealand electricity or energy sector, familiarity with complex electricity market models and experience drawing insights from large data sets is advantageous but not essential. Applications close 3 November 2026; existing eligibility to work in New Zealand is required.
