Manager, Communications & Engagement Partnering

About the role

This newly created senior position leads the Communications & Engagement Partnering function for Tauranga City Council. Reporting to the Head of Communications and Engagement, you will shape how the council connects with the community on priority issues and support senior leaders in complex conversations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of Communications & Engagement Partners.
• Set priorities, manage workloads and ensure high‑quality delivery of communications and consultation projects.
• Act as the trusted advisor to General Managers and senior leaders on politically sensitive and high‑risk matters.
• Oversee statutory consultation processes and ensure alignment with local government policies.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with iwi, diverse community groups and external stakeholders.

Required profile

• 8–10 years of experience in communications, engagement or public relations.
• At least 3 years of senior‑level people leadership or partnership experience.
• Proven track record handling complex, high‑risk or politically sensitive projects.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti‑based practice and experience working with iwi and diverse communities.
• Clear, confident communicator with strong coaching and relationship‑building abilities.
