Legal Counsel – Litigation & Dispute Resolution

About the role
Auckland Council is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its Litigation & Dispute Resolution team. The role involves managing high‑value civil proceedings that affect the city and its communities, from initial correspondence through to final resolution.
Key responsibilities
- Run civil litigation matters from pre‑action correspondence to resolution.
- Conduct court‑based proceedings, including interlocutory steps and hearings.
- Assist on complex disputes such as building defects, valuation, negligence and nuisance claims.
- Draft pleadings, submissions, legal advice and formal correspondence.
- Engage directly with internal clients, experts, opposing counsel and the courts.
- Contribute to litigation strategy, risk assessment and dispute‑resolution outcomes.
Required profile
- 3–4 years post‑qualification experience (PQE) in civil litigation or dispute resolution.
- Experience gained in a law firm or advocacy‑focused litigation environment.
- Confidence conducting proceedings and managing matters with appropriate supervision.
- Strong drafting skills across pleadings, submissions and written advice.
- Proactive, litigation‑minded approach with a genuine interest in advocacy.
- Current New Zealand practising certificate.
