Legal Counsel – Commercial

About the role

Join the New Zealand Transport Agency’s in‑house legal team as a Commercial Legal Counsel. You will provide expert legal advice across commercial, infrastructure, health and safety, technology, privacy and general operations, helping shape the nation’s transport system.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on a wide range of commercial, contractual and advisory legal matters.
• Collaborate with the Commercial and Legal teams to support strategic objectives and mitigate risk.
• Ensure a consistent legal approach across commercial operations.
• Develop strong internal relationships and provide pragmatic, solution‑focused advice.
• Contribute to the agency’s commitment to Te Ao Māori and an inclusive workplace.

Required profile

• At least 3 years post‑qualification legal experience, preferably in commercial law.
• Law degree and a current New Zealand Law Society practising certificate.
• Excellent communication, relationship‑building and attention‑to‑detail skills.
• Growth mindset, collaborative style and strong customer focus.
• Willingness to engage with Te Ao Māori and support NZTA’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
