Lead Substation Engineer – Energy & Industrial

About the role

Aurecon is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to join its Energy & Industrial team in New Zealand. Based in Auckland, Wellington or Hamilton, you will drive the design and delivery of high‑voltage substation projects that support critical transmission and distribution networks.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design of HV substation primary, cable and earthing systems from concept through detailed design.
• Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary transmission and distribution projects in NZ and Australia.
• Prepare design reports, power system studies, proposals and budget estimates for complex projects.
• Build strong relationships with clients, contractors and internal teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
• Mentor and guide engineers and designers while supporting project planning, resourcing and programme delivery.

Required profile

• Relevant qualifications in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering.
• 12+ years’ experience in transmission and distribution substation design.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand and/or Australian utility standards, codes and industry practices.
• Proven ability to deliver projects across the full lifecycle, from planning to commissioning.
• Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
