Lead Substation Engineer – Electrical Transmission

About the role

Lead Substation Engineer in Aurecon’s Energy & Industrial team, based in Auckland (with options in Wellington or Hamilton). You will contribute to major transmission and distribution projects across New Zealand and Australia, delivering HV substation designs from concept through detailed design.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of HV substation primary, cable and earthing systems from concept to detailed design.
• Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary transmission and distribution projects in NZ and Australia.
• Prepare design reports, power system studies, proposals and budget estimates for complex projects.
• Build strong relationships with clients, contractors and internal teams to ensure successful outcomes.
• Mentor and guide engineers and designers while supporting project planning and programme delivery.
• Contribute to shaping the technical delivery approach and the growth of the Energy & Industrial team.

Required profile

• Relevant qualification in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering.
• 12+ years’ experience in transmission and distribution substation design.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand and/or Australian utility standards, codes and industry practices.
• Proven track record delivering projects through the full lifecycle, from concept to commissioning.
• Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• CPEng registration is an advantage.
