Lead Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Aurecon is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to drive high‑impact, multi‑disciplinary projects across energy, resources, manufacturing, dairy, and food & beverage sectors in New Zealand. Based primarily in Christchurch, you will shape strategy, strengthen client partnerships, and mentor emerging talent while delivering sustainable engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead medium to large project delivery from concept design and costing through detailed mechanical design, construction management, commissioning and handover.
• Oversee the full project lifecycle including cost estimation, budgeting, design coordination, procurement and site‑based problem solving.
• Provide technical leadership for mechanical and piping design, specifications, and drawing management.
• Mentor junior engineers, build team capability and ensure high‑quality client outcomes.
• Strengthen client relationships, support business development and contribute to winning new work.
• Integrate decarbonisation and energy‑efficient design practices into project delivery.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent Washington Accord qualification.
• Proven experience leading mechanical engineering projects in dairy, food & beverage, clean industry, industrial manufacturing or similar sectors, preferably in New Zealand.
• Strong commercial acumen with a track record of delivering projects that meet client expectations and business objectives.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and engage with clients on site.
